Two-phase extraction of tobacco waste extracts and their cosmetic efficacy

  • A two-phase aqueous extraction method was established to prepare tobacco waste extracts. The effects of different extraction conditions on the yield of upper phase polyphe nols were studied. The antioxidant activity and UV absorption chaoracteristic were also discussed. The results indicated when the solid-liquid ratio of tobacco waste was 1:60, the stirring time was 30 min, the mass fraction of (NH4)2SO4 was 23.3 % and the ethanol was 23.5 %, the extraction rate of upper phase polyphenols was the highest, and the content of polyphenol was 48.59 mg/g. The tobacco waste extracts showed good antioxidant activity, and the scavenging rate of DPPH free radical was 98 % and ABTS free radical was 78 % at the mass concentration of 2 mg/mL. When the mass concentration of the extracts was 0.5 mg/mL, the extracts had good UV absorption and a certain effect of light protection. When the mass concentration of the extracts was within the range of 0~1. 2 mg/mL, the extracts had no cytotoxicity to HaCat cells and were expected to become a natural and non-irritating functional cosmetic raw material.
