Finite element analysis of axial ultimate capacity of X-type branch plate-to-square hollow section connection

  • A finite element model simulating the experiment on X-type branch plate-to-square hollow section connection was generated by ABAQUS and validated by comparing the axial ultimate capacity,strain distribution and failure mode with experimental results.The result showed that under the effect of axial pressure,plate local buckled near the weld,the plate tilted because of out-of-plane instability;it should be avoided that due to the fact the thickness of plate was relatively smaller than chord joints should be strengthened by increasing plate thickness or installing rib stiffener on bath sides of plate in engineering; X-type branch plate-to-square hollow section connections had weak plastic deformation capacity from plasticity.
